What Is a Physician Associate, and What Can I Do for Patients in Wyoming?

One of the most common questions I hear is:

"What exactly is a Physician Associate?"

It's a fair question. While Physician Associates (formerly known as Physician Assistants) have been providing high-quality medical care throughout the United States for decades, many patients are still unfamiliar with the extensive education, training, and responsibilities we have.

My Background

I have been a nationally board-certified Physician Associate since 2009. Over the course of my career, I have practiced in multiple medical specialties, including:

  • Family Medicine

  • Urgent Care

  • Emergency Medicine

  • Pain Management

  • Addiction Medicine

These diverse experiences have allowed me to care for patients across a broad spectrum of health concerns, from routine preventive care to complex chronic medical conditions and acute illnesses.

What Is a Physician Associate?

A Physician Associate (PA-C) is a licensed medical professional educated in the medical model and trained to diagnose, treat, and manage disease. Physician Associates complete rigorous graduate-level medical education, extensive clinical training, and must pass a national certification examination administered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) before becoming board certified. Maintaining certification requires ongoing continuing medical education and periodic recertification throughout a career.

Unlike many people realize, Physician Associates are not simply assistants. Wyoming law specifically recognizes that Physician Associates practice medicine and are qualified through their education, training, and experience to provide a broad range of diagnostic, therapeutic, health promotion, and disease prevention services.

What Can a Physician Associate Do in Wyoming?

The short answer is: nearly everything patients typically expect from their primary care provider.

At Frontier Family Health, I can:

Perform Comprehensive Medical Evaluations

I obtain medical histories, perform physical examinations, assess symptoms, and evaluate overall health concerns.

Order and Interpret Diagnostic Testing

I can order and interpret:

  • Blood work and laboratory studies

  • X-rays

  • CT scans

  • MRI studies

  • Ultrasounds

  • Cardiac testing

  • Other diagnostic procedures as medically appropriate

Diagnose Medical Conditions

Based on a patient's history, examination, and testing results, I formulate diagnoses and help patients understand what is causing their symptoms.

Create Individualized Treatment Plans

Every patient is different. Treatment plans are tailored to the individual and may include:

  • Lifestyle modifications

  • Nutritional recommendations

  • Functional medicine approaches

  • Herbal or natural therapies when appropriate

  • Conventional medical treatments

  • Medication management

  • Preventive care strategies

Prescribe Medications

Wyoming law grants Physician Associates broad prescribing authority. I can prescribe medications, including controlled substances when medically appropriate and legally authorized, with the exception of Schedule I substances.

Refer to Specialists

When specialized expertise is needed, I can refer patients to the appropriate specialists and coordinate their care.

Manage Chronic Diseases

I routinely help patients manage conditions such as:

  • Diabetes

  • High blood pressure

  • High cholesterol

  • Thyroid disorders

  • Obesity

  • Anxiety and depression

  • Chronic pain conditions

  • Hormonal concerns

Provide Preventive Care

Preventing illness is often just as important as treating it. Preventive services may include:

  • Annual wellness visits

  • Health screenings

  • Weight management

  • Lifestyle counseling

  • Risk-factor reduction

  • Long-term health planning

What Does Physician Associate Autonomy Mean in Wyoming?

Wyoming has been a leader in recognizing the capabilities of experienced Physician Associates. Current Wyoming law acknowledges that Physician Associates are trained medical professionals capable of exercising independent medical judgment within the scope of their education, experience, and competence. The law also recognizes that collaboration should occur when appropriate based on the patient's needs rather than requiring physician involvement in every clinical decision.

In practical terms, this means that when you come to Frontier Family Health, you are receiving care from a provider who is fully trained and licensed to evaluate your concerns, diagnose conditions, order testing, prescribe treatment, and coordinate your ongoing healthcare.

My Philosophy of Care

Perhaps more important than what I am legally authorized to do is how I choose to practice medicine.

I believe healthcare works best when patients are treated as individuals rather than numbers. Every patient has unique goals, values, experiences, and circumstances. My role is not simply to prescribe medications or order tests. My role is to listen, educate, guide, and partner with patients as they pursue better health.

Some patients prefer a highly natural and lifestyle-centered approach. Others prefer more traditional medical treatments. Most fall somewhere in between. My goal is to meet patients where they are and develop a plan that is realistic, personalized, and effective.

At Frontier Family Health, you are not just another appointment on a busy schedule. You are a neighbor, a member of our community, and a partner in your own healthcare journey.
